Clos Saron Home Vineyard Old Block Pinot Noir 2015
Clos Saron Home Vineyard Old Block Pinot Noir 2015
Clos Saron's 2015 Home Vineyard "Old Block" Pinot Noir is a limited-production wine from the Sierra Foothills, with only 530 bottles produced. The "Old Block" refers to the vineyard's oldest half-acre, originally planted with own-rooted Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 1979 and later grafted to Pinot Noir in 1995. Situated at an elevation of 1,550 to 1,600 feet, the vineyard features brownish-yellow clay-loam topsoil over volcanic ash and quartz subsoil, contributing to the wine's unique terroir.
Clos Saron employs a meticulous harvesting process, making consecutive weekly passes through the vineyard to select only clusters that are ripe to the touch, similar to assessing the ripeness of an avocado. This approach results in a "cluster select" wine from the entire crop. The wines are known for their longevity and slow evolution, with the "Old Block" cuvée aged for several years before release to allow for optimal development.
The 2015 vintage was released in January 2024. Compared to the standard "Home Vineyard" Pinot Noir, the "Old Block" is lighter in color and body, showcasing red fruit characteristics, floral hints, and a finer texture. In contrast, the "Home Vineyard" tends to be denser, more structured, and savory.
This wine exemplifies Clos Saron's commitment to producing terroir-driven Pinot Noir that reflects the unique qualities of their historic vineyard.
