Maguey Melate presents an exceptional mezcal crafted by Rosario Ángeles Vásquez, a first-generation maestra mezcalera from Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca. This artisanal spirit is an ensamble of wild-harvested Tobaziche and Madrecuixe agaves, both members of the Karwinskii family, which take approximately 10 to 15 years to reach maturity. The production process adheres to traditional methods: the mature agaves are cooked in an earthen oven, milled by hand using wooden mallets, and naturally fermented in open-air wooden vats. Distillation occurs in small clay pot stills, a hallmark of the Santa Catarina Minas region, resulting in a mezcal that embodies the rich heritage and craftsmanship of its origin.
In the glass, this mezcal exhibits a crystalline clarity. On the nose, it offers an inviting bouquet of herbal and vegetal aromas, characteristic of Karwinskii agaves, with subtle smoky undertones. The palate reveals a harmonious blend of earthy and mineral flavors, complemented by notes of green herbs and a gentle smokiness, leading to a smooth, lingering finish. This mezcal is both robust and refined, best for sipping neat to fully appreciate its complexity.
Rosario Ángeles Vásquez, who transitioned from a career as an English teacher to mezcal production, has quickly gained recognition for her dedication to preserving traditional mezcal-making techniques. Her commitment to quality and authenticity is evident in every bottle, reflecting the unique terroir of Santa Catarina Minas and the rich cultural heritage of Oaxacan mezcal. Maguey Melate, known for sourcing exceptional small-batch agave spirits, continues to support and showcase talented producers like Rosario, ensuring that the art of mezcal production thrives for future generations.
