Rey Campero Tepeztate Mezcal Artesanal is a handcrafted spirit produced in Candelaria Yegolé, Oaxaca, by Maestro Mezcalero Vicente Sánchez Parada. This mezcal is distilled from 100% wild Tepeztate agave (Agave marmorata), a species that matures over 15 to 18 years in the region's challenging terrains.
The production process begins with roasting the mature agave hearts in a traditional conical earthen pit, imparting a subtle smokiness. The cooked agaves are then milled using a traditional stone tahona and fermented in open-air wooden vats with natural yeasts. Double distillation occurs in wood-fired copper pot stills, resulting in a mezcal that embodies the essence of its terroir.
On the nose, this mezcal presents aromas of white flowers and yellow pepper. The palate reveals flavors of coriander, fresh-cut grass, and banana leaf, culminating in a finish characterized by jalapeño and Sichuan peppercorn notes.
